FASTags for Electronic Toll Collection

2019 ias preliminary exam test series

National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has taken two revolutionary steps in consultation with RBI and NPCI to facilitate the availability of FASTags for electronic toll collection.

These are the online sale of FASTags and offline sales through Common Services Centres, CSC, to be set up near toll plazas.

FASTags could also be purchased online from the websites of issuer banks and the NHAI website and would be delivered by courier at the doorstep of the purchaser.

It is expected that the move will increase the sale of FASTags by improving availability and access.

From now, FASTags can also be bought from the sale points of CSC to be set up near the toll plazas.

FASTag is a brand name for Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) at toll plazas on National Highways. ETC entails payment of highway tolls electronically without needing to stop the vehicle at the toll plazas.

The NHAI also launched two mobile Apps – MyFASTag and FASTag Partner to facilitate the availability of FASTags for Electronic Toll Collection.

The mobile Apps will ease the process, making it possible to buy or recharge FASTags at the click of a mobile button. MyFASTag is a consumer App that can be downloaded from the App Store for both Android and iOS systems.

A consumer can purchase or recharge FASTags on this App and it will also help to keep track of transactions and provides for online grievance redressal.

FASTag Partner is a merchant App and agencies like Common Services Centre, banking partners and vehicle dealers can sell and enroll FASTag through this App.

FASTag is a device that employs Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology for making toll payments directly from the prepaid account linked to it. It is affixed on the windscreen of your vehicle and enables you to drive through toll plazas.

FASTag has a validity of 5 years and after purchasing it, you only need to recharge/ top up the FASTag as per your requirement.

FASTag offers near non-stop movement of vehicles through toll plazas and the convenience of cashless payment of toll fee with nation-wide interoperable Electronic Toll Collection Services.

FASTag is a simple to use, reloadable tag which enables automatic deduction of toll charges and lets you pass through the toll plaza without stopping for the cash transaction.

FASTag is linked to a prepaid account from which the applicable toll amount is deducted. The tag employs Radio-frequency Identification (RFID) technology and is affixed on the vehicle’s windscreen after the tag account is active.

FASTag is a perfect solution for a hassle free trip on national highways. FASTag is presently operational at 180 toll plazas across national and state highways. More toll plazas will be brought under the FASTag program in the future.

Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL) (a company incorporated by National Highways Authority of India) and National Payment Corporation of India (NPCI) are implementing this program with help from Toll Plaza Concessionaires, FASTag Issuer Agencies and Toll Transaction Acquirer (select banks).
